SLIPPERY ELM BARK ~ POWDER
Ulmus fulva /Ulmus rubra

Slippery Elm derives from the inner bark of an American species of Elm known as Red Elm. Although Elm was also used in Europe and is even mentioned by Dioscorides, the use of this plant is more common in the United States and the UK, where it was introduced via the Native American Materia Medica. Elms have become quite a rare sight in the UK and Europe since the outbreak of the Dutch Elm disease wiped out huge populations of these trees. The fact, that it is the inner bark that is collected for medicinal use, which effectively kills the trees, does not bode well for their future, especially since Dutch Elm disease has also ravaged large populations in the United States and Canada. At present Red Elm is being considered for inclusion in the CITES list, so recent conservation efforts to ensure a sustainable harvest don’t come a moment too soon. Slippery Elm was one of the original herbs included in the famous Essiac mixture, the herbal anti-cancer formula devised by the Canadian nurse Rene Caisse.

The main benefit of Slippery Elm is its soothing mucilaginous quality, which is equally comforting for a range of inner conditions as it is as an external application. Internally Slippery Elm soothes a sore throat like no other herb and can be a veritable life saver for singers. It is also excellent as a pacifier for the digestive system when this is in a state of upheaval. It lines the entire length of the mucous membrane of the tract thus reducing any possible irritation, such as may occur when stomach juices come in contact with ulcerated tissue. Thus it can be used in all types of irritable bowel or stomach conditions, ulcers, colitis and similar complaints. Slippery Elm powder also has actual nutritious properties, which makes it suitable as a food for convalescence, either by itself or mixed with other foods, which it will help to keep down. Slippery Elm also soothes an irritated urinary tract and may be helpful in inflammatory conditions of the bladder and kidneys.
Externally, Slippery Elm is an excellent herb for poultices to soothe sore and inflamed skin conditions such as nappy rash and sores. Native Americans also use it in combination with other herbs as a wound dressing or to treat burns, boils and ulcers.

Rumex acetosella

The sour leaves of sorrel and sheep sorrel have long been appreciated for their tart flavour, which provided a good source of vitamin C in the days when citrus fruit where not so readily available. They have often been included in spring cleansing diets and in France and Germany they have a solid place in traditional wild herb soups. Yet, gardeners are usually not very pleased to encounter this herb in their gardens and consider it a weed. Children, on the other hand, like its sour taste and often munch on the leaves. However, the tart flavour is due to a high amount of oxalates, which are sharp little crystals that can be damaging to the kidneys if eaten in large quantities. Oxalates are also commonly found in spinach and rhubarb.

Sheep’s sorrel has cleansing properties, stimulates cellular regeneration and acts as a cooling astringent. It is often given as a cooling febrifuge tea. Its cleansing properties can purify the blood and help to eliminate toxins. Sheep Sorrel is thought to be one of the most active ingredients of Essiac, the famous anti-cancer remedy of the Canadian nurse Rene Caisse. Sheep’s Sorrel is rich in phytoestrogens, which are usually more commonly associated with the Clover family, and also has a strong anti-oxidant effect. It is said to be a reliable vermifuge. It can be used as a supportive remedy in certain skin conditions. In low doses it can reduce excessive menstrual bleeding and diarrhoea.

Native to the Andes mountain range, Maca has long been used by the indigenous peoples of this region to promote sexual function and fertility. The Incans used Maca in many of their natural remedies, specifically to enhance energy, increase stamina, endurance and strength. It is also known as Peruvian Ginseng due to its stimulating qualities.

Benefits
Endocrine Health

Maca is also known as “food for your endocrine glands”. The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones responsible for regulating metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, mood and response to stress and/or injury. A powerful adaptogen, these qualities are due to glucosinolates, plant alkaloids within Maca root which help your endocrine system do its job – especially during sub-optimal conditions, for example when you are stressed or anxious. The role of Maca in the endocrine system is that it stimulates the pituitary gland and when this gland is performing optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced.

Sexual Health

Subsequent Maca benefits all seem to stem from the fact that it primarily balances the endocrine system. It is a particularly potent aphrodisiac – the ancient Peruvians ingested this powerful root to boost the potency of the male libido. A great fertility booster, studies have shown that in men it can improve sperm quality, motility and volume. Glucosinolates, the plant alkaloids mentioned above, can also positively affect fertility for both men and women. These alkaloids are responsible for Maca’s ability to support hormonal balance. This balancing effect also controls oestrogen levels in the body, increasing reproductive health and decreasing symptoms of PMS, PCOS and the menopause.

Anxiety & Stress

In our fast paced hectic lives, stress can be unavoidable. One of the symptoms of stress can be “adrenal fatigue” – the way Maca can help this condition is by harnessing its adaptogenic qualities to regulate the hormones that are produced by this gland. An adaptogen will only go where it is needed, if your body is overproducing a hormone, it regulates it back to normal and if your body under-produces a hormone, it helps raise the level until it is balanced. For this reason it is a powerful weapon to have in your arsenal to combat excessive stress and anxiety.

Energy & Mood Booster

Due to its rich nutritional content and adaptogenic qualities, Maca will naturally have a positive effect on energy, stamina and mood. A nutritional powerhouse, Maca is packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients – especially B Vitamins which are renowned for their brain boosting qualities. This dense nutrition is also responsible for its ability to boost energy levels in a sustained and balanced way.

Typical Use
1 -2 teaspoons per day is recommended. Add to smoothies, milk, fruit juice or water. Alternatively sprinkle on porridge, cereal, or soup.

According to folklore, ancient Incan warriors took maca before going off to battle to make them physically strong. However, they were later prohibited from taking it, in order to protect conquered women from their heightened libidos. Maca is a popular integral part of the Peruvian way of life. It is a root vegetable that looks a bit like a turnip and is used in soups, cakes, breads and drinks in Peru. It is grown high in the Andes at 14,000 ft in very rich soils. Maca is very effective in pulling minerals from the soil, making its mineral content especially high.

BURDOCK ROOT

Arctium lappa

Although it is often despised as a weed, Burdock is one of the most useful healing plants. All parts of the plants, root, leaves and seeds are medicinally very valuable. In Japan it is cultivated as a vegetable. The sticky burrs of Burdock provided the inspiration for Velcro.

Traditional
The roots in particular have tremendous detoxifying power, a quality also often described as ‘blood cleansing’. What that means is that Burdock supports the liver to detoxify and eliminate poisons from the body. Thus, Burdock is often given as a supportive remedy for skin diseases, such as acne, psoriasis or eczema, but its power can be utilised much more broadly wherever a system cleanse is indicated. It is one of the ingredients of the Essiac formula, which is used as an anti-tumour / cancer cleansing remedy. The root is also very rich in inuline, regulates gallbladder function and is useful in cases of diabetes and liver disease. Burdock and Nettle root combined make an excellent hair tonic that stimulates hair growth and combats dandruff. The leaves are particularly healing when used externally as a wash or poultice for badly healing wounds, ulcers and skin rashes etc.

Magical
In folk magic Burdock was considered a powerful herb that could protect home and stables and played a role in transfer magic. Being so robust it was thought to be able to withstand diseases much better than a feeble human. By sympathetic magic, (being such a hairy creature), it was hailed as a magic remedy that makes the hair grow.

CHAMOMILE
Matricaria recutita

Of all the herbs in the western herbalist’s material medica Chamomile is perhaps the most universally useful – with its help, a skilled herbalist can ally almost any affliction. Chamomile looks like an overgrown Daisy and indeed it belongs to the same family of plants. It is a great blessing that something so useful is also so common, though familiarity breeds contempt, causing us to loose sight of our herbal blessings. Chamomile has been used and revered since ancient times and all the great herbalists of antiquity praise it highly. It is even a healer to other plants it grows near, which has earned it the name of ‘plant’s physician’ – only bees seem to dislike its smell.

Traditional
Chamomile radiates joy, peace and simplicity. It has a way of creating order out of chaos, when the inner balance has been disturbed. It is a tonic for the nervous system, soothing, yet strengthening the nerves without stimulation, which has a roll-on effect on just about all the other bodily systems. It takes the edge off frazzled nerves that keep us from finding sleep at night or make it impossible to properly digest our food. It calms a nervous stomach and soothes any inflammatory conditions of the digestive system, including ulcers and colitis. Its calming effects are also helpful in IBS, colic or diarrhoea. Chamomile is decongestant and one of the best remedies to treat a head cold with excessive mucus and blocked up sinuses. Externally it soothes all types of inflammatory skin conditions and sore or sensitive spots. It has often been called a mother’s herb, for it can soothe most problems mothers have to deal with, from nappy rash to teething problems, to upset tummies or frenzied screaming fits and hyperactivity. Last but by no means least, it also soothes and strengthens the mother’s nerves and helps her deal with it all.

Magical
Chamomile is a gentle, yet powerful herb of the sun that brings peace, serenity and light to the soul and calms all sense of fretting or fear. It is an excellent herb for chakra balancing and to help one find one’s inner centre. Chamomile may inspire confidence and open the heart to expressing love and compassion. It can also be used for dream work, as it protects the seeker on his astral journeys and wards off demonic entities and nightmares. It is used to bring clarity of vision for divination and scrying, and may also be used for prophetic dreams. Chamomile has a reputation for attracting good fortune, especially in monetary matters.

DANDELION ROOT
Taraxacum officinale

Dandelion is probably the most commonly recognised wild flower – every child knows the sunny blobs that appear in early spring and sprinkle the fields with floral sunshine. Their sight delights the heart, for they are a sure sign that spring is near. Only gardeners look upon it with dismay, for their profuse seed disposal and rampant roots that won’t be defied not matter how hard one digs at them. From the tiniest bit left in the ground new Dandelions will sprout. But instead of cursing them we should be grateful for their profusion, for there are few more healthful herbs so easy to come by. Its name Dandelion is an adaptation of Dent de Lion – Lion’s tooth, in allusion to the fearsomely jagged profile of the leaf margins. Its other French derived name ‘Pis-en lit – ‘Piss-a-bed’, is not particularly charming, but tells us something about the leaves effects. Children love playing with all parts of this little flower, weaving garlands, or running water through their hollow stems, or blowing their beautifully delicate globe of helicoptered seeds to the winds. Some country folk still remember the healthy virtues of this plant in spring and use it as a vegetable – eating the leaves as salad, roasting the roots as vegetable or as a coffee substitute, and making wine from the flower heads.

Traditional
If Dandelion leaves are a tonic for the kidney, the roots are a tonic for the digestive system, liver and gall bladder. Their bitterness stimulates the flow of all digestive juices and bile, but don’t use if the gallbladder duct is somehow blocked. The roots dug in the autumn are particularly rich in inuline and are highly beneficial for diabetes. The liver toning properties of dandelion help to clean the blood of impurities and are thus also very helpful as a supportive remedy for skin conditions. Together, dandelion leaves and roots make the best overall spring cleansing herb.

Magical
Children divine all kinds of oracles by blowing on the seeds – depending on how often they have to blow until the last seed has been taken by the wind they determine the time of day, the number of years until one will be married, how many children one might be blessed with etc. This use of Dandelion as a flower clock certainly explains kid’s odd sense of timing. In the old days Dandelion was an important herb in spring rites, many of which were cleansing and protection rituals – it was included in the 9 herb bundle and it was considered essential to eat Dandelion on Maudy Thursday in order to prevent sickness for the rest of the year. Witches are known for their evil doings, such as stealing the milk from innocent cows, but Dandelion in their diet would is sure to restore it. Dandelion is a herb of prosperity, health and protection, and anybody would do well to honour it.

ELDER FLOWERS
Sambucus nigra

The well-known Elder tree, common to every hedge in England, is one of the most magical plants in the hedge-witches repertoire. Old names like Holler, Hylder, Hyllantree, and the German word Holunder or Hylde Moer, as she was known in Denmark, all refer to an ancient vegetation Goddess to whom the Elder-tree was sacred, in times gone by. Elder was thought to be inhabited by a tree-dryad, which embodied its soul. The dryad could be kind or fierce, depending on how it was treated. Those who respected the Elder tree and never cut its branches were protected and blessed, but woe to those who dared to lay an axe on the sacred wood. The only good reason to pick at any part of the Elder tree was for medicine, if one solemnly explained one’s purpose and asked permission from the tree. Elder indeed has truly amazing medicinal powers, so much so that some people have termed them ‘a poor person’s medicine chest’, as a little book published in 1644 testifies, which was entirely dedicated to the virtues of Elder. The author praises the Elder-tree in no less than 230 pages. The booklet became so popular that it ran through several editions in both, the English and the Latin version. Every single part of the plant was mentioned as medicinally useful. Reference is even made to an edible fungus known as ‘Judas Ear’, which often appears on Elders that grow in damp and shady places. Accordingly, its medicinal powers were deemed effective for treating quinsy, sore throats and strangulation. (Judas was thought to have hanged himself from an Elder tree, which is why Elder never since could grow into a tall, upright tree.) The various parts of the Elder tree itself were deemed effective for practically any ailment, ‘from toothache to the plague’.

Traditional
Although still considered a valuable item in the herbal medicine chest, Elder does not quite enjoy the eminent status it once held. In the past not only the flowers, but leaves and inner bark were used extensively. Today the flowers are the only part that is still commonly used in contemporary herbal medicine. They have a long-standing reputation as a treatment for all kinds of inflammatory and congestive conditions of the respiratory system, especially when these are accompanied by fever. An infusion can be made to treat coughs, colds and flu, asthma and hay-fever. The diaphoretic action helps to reduce fevers and thus it has often proven useful in cases of measles, scarlet fever and other infections. Externally an infusion of Elder-flowers can be added to the bath-water for a wonderfully refreshing bath that soothes irritable nerves and relieves itchy skin. A cool infusion can be used as an eye-wash for sore or inflamed eyes. Earache may be relieved by means of a poultice made from the flowers. For this purpose a small linen bag is filled with flowers, briefly dipped in hot water and squeezed to press out any excess liquid before it is applied to the aching ear.

Magical
Elder is a very magical tree and sacred to the Great Goddess, who presides over the mysteries of life, death and rebirth. As such, the Elder tree symbolises fertility and rejuvenation as well as the realm of magic and healing. It is a tree of protection, and twigs of it were often pinned over the doors to ward off evil spirits. It was grown near the house to benefit from its healing and protective powers and to protect the farm against lightening flashes. But above all, Elder trees are linked to the realm of the fairies and it was said that one might see their procession passing by if one hid in an Elder grove on St. John’s night (drinking some Elder champagne)

LEMON BALM
Melissa officinalis

Sometimes the humblest of herbs bear the greatest treasures. Melissa is a common garden herb and spreads so liberally that some people consider it a weed. No showy flowers, nor pretty seeds, yet its essential oil is precious indeed. The ancients praised Melissa as ‘an herb of Jupiter that gladdens the heart’, the Prosac of antiquity it seems, which Paracelsus thought capable of entirely restoring a man’s vitality. Other writers admire its ability to strengthen the mind and memory. Melissa is a great herb for students as well as for old people whose memory begins to fade. It brings cheer to those who feel burdened. Lemon Balm is sacred to the Great Goddess and her honey bees, in fact, the name Melissa means ‘bee’ in Greek, and even in English Melissa is sometimes called ‘bee balm’. Bee keepers rub their hives with the herb to ensure that their bees will always come back. Similarly, in times gone by, Melissa was used as a strewing herb to keep the home scented sweet and welcoming.

Traditional
An excellent herb for the nervous system. It strengthens the vital spirits and eases heart and mind. It can be used for all kinds of nervous conditions such as depression, nervous tension, mental exhaustion, anxieties, phobias, hypochondria and even hysteria. It helps regulate menstrual problems and is helpful for PMT and menopausal problems. It is also useful for the digestive system and can relief cramps and colic due to wind. Old herbals recommend simmering the herb in white wine instead of infusing it with water. It is a wonderful herb for insomnia and ideal for deep relaxation after a stressful day. It takes away gloominess, tension and depression and gladdens the heart. Melissa also yields an extremely precious and powerful essential oil that is known as a premier anti viral agent, which, among other things, is effective for treating Herpes simplex – see essential oil of Melissa.

Magical
Melissa enables the student to absorb knowledge more deeply and to commit to memory what has been learnt, while refreshing the mind and keeping spirits up. It is also a great herb for dispelling the demons of depression and loneliness. It is very useful for meditation as it helps centring and brings peace to heart and mind. It can be used to open or balance the heart chakra. Melissa may help the practitioner connect with the cosmic flow of prosperity and help gain an understanding of the laws of giving and receiving. Melissa is also well known as a ‘dream herb’. It may induce prophetic dreams and can be used for astral journeys.

LIQUORICE ROOT
Glycyrrhiza glabra

Who is not familiar with the sticky black confectionary known as liquorice’ A popular sweet and flavouring agent, liquorice has been well known and widely used throughout Britain and northern Europe since Medieval times and has been cultivated in England since 1560, though it naturally prefers hotter climes. It originates in southern and south-eastern Europe, but has spread throughout the near and middle East and even as far east as China, where the local variety serves as one of the most popular ingredients of Chinese compound medicines. Liquorice is a medium sized shrub that belongs to the pea family, but it is the rhizomes of 3-4 year old plants that are used for flavouring and medicine. The roots are shredded and boiled until a thick black syrup results, which upon cooling solidifies into the familiar black substance. Natural Liquorice is 50 times sweeter than sugar and as a flavouring agent it is usually mixed with Aniseed. It is popular in certain baked goods, but most importantly, it lends its flavour to mask other, less pleasant medicines, while the powder is used to reduce the stickiness of pills.

Traditional
Liquorice has long been valued as a soothing agent for the throat and bronchi and is used by itself or in combination with other herbs, such as Fennel and Aniseed. It is mildly laxative and makes a great additive to bitter laxative teas such as Cascara Sagrada. Recent studies point to a far more powerful and interesting use of Liquorice though. It has been discovered that Liquorice is strongly anti-inflammatory and has a marked effect in conditions such as arthritis and gout. It also appears to have a powerful effect on the glandular system and the liver. It gently stimulates and balances the adrenal glands, which may be very useful in cases of chronic fatigue syndrome. It is also estrogenic and reduces testosterone. Thus, it may be helpful in regulating certain hormonal imbalances caused by oestrogen deficiency. Liquorice has also shown a protective and healing effect on the stomach and liver. It is indicated for stomach ulcers as well as for cases of chronic liver inflammation (hepatitis) and even cirrhosis. However, due to the possibility of certain adverse drug interaction it is mandatory to consult a qualified practitioner before attempting self-treatment.

Magical
Magical use of Liquorice is not well documented. Culpeper ascribes the herb to Mercury. Its effects can be classified as balancing and thus may help the practitioner to maintain the middle path without being led astray into extreme forms of practice (over indulgence or asceticism and abstinence). In Germany the herb was regarded as life-giving and has been used in fertility rites, especially for women
